From the first time you saw him in Episode 1, you knew that this was one awesome Star Wars character. Personally, I thought Dart Maul was THE highlight in the first of Lucas’s prequels. Let’s take an in depth look at this Sith Lord’s weapon of choice, the double bladed light-saber.
There are several options for those of you who wish to follow in Darth Maul’s footsteps and learn the art of the double bladed light-saber.
Force FX Darth Maul Lightsaber Replica
Who’s it for: Star War Memorabilia Collectors and Star Wars Costume Enthusiasts
A couple of years ago, Master Replicas was behind producing these divinely built replicas. Initially, once Hasbro picked up the license, there was fear that the Toy Maker would lower the quality that Master Replicas had built up such a sterling reputation for. However, those fears have been proven to be unfounded. Hasbro has continued to use sturdy components, including the fully brushed aluminum handle.
The blade’s lighting effect is phenomenal, giving a crisp bright red glow which looks spectacular, especially in darker environments. Once the blade is “ignited” the light appears to go from the handle up, and just the opposite once the saber is turned off.
The sound effects of the force FX darth maul lightsaber all come from the movies, and are triggered when sudden movements are made with the lightsaber, or on ignition or turn off. When the lightsaber is inert, it continues to hum, just like in the movies.
The Force FX saber also comes with an adapter attachment that allows you to connect 2 of these blades together to form the darth maul double lightsaber, which extends to about 7 ft. 4 in..
The Force FX darth maul lightsaber is definitely not a “toy” that you’d let your 6 year have at with. It is a quality replica and is not meant for “battle”. The blade can get scuffed up or even break completely, so be careful!
Dual Action Lightsaber
Who’s it for: Children over the age of 6
I was tempted not to include this lightsaber here because it’s not a true darth maul lightsaber. However, it is a fun toy, that any star wars loving kid would be geeked about having in his lightsaber battle chest.
This Hasbro toy follows the classic plastic telescoping extension that most of us have come to know and love. While you can get this particular toy with either a red or a blue blade, since we’re talking about a sith master here, we’re only going to discuss the red, which, like most plastic telescopic sabers, doesn’t light up bright enough to be seen in direct sun, but is serviceable in darker rooms.
What makes this an alternative to the darth maul lightsaber toy is the fact that there is a “secret” smaller second blade that is hidden in the handle of the larger blade. The second blade can then be screwed into place into the handle to form a double lightsaber, although one of the blades is much smaller than the other, so you kinda need an imagination to make it feel like you are wielding the same weapon that was the end of Qui-Gon Jin. The hidden lightsaber also forces the handle to be a little larger than a normal telescopic lightsaber, so I wouldn’t recommend this toy for young children with smaller hands.
Darth Maul Lightsaber Chopsticks
Who’s it for: Orange Chicken loving Sith Lords
What does a Sith Lord do when he orders up a heaping pile of Chow Mein? Bust out his Lightsaber chopsticks of course!
Okay, if I saw someone bust these out at the local Chinese restaurant, I would have no other option but to kow tow in this uber-geek’s presence. And how would he salute me you wonder, by placing the magnetic ends of his chopsticks together to form a double sided chopstick….errr.. lightsaber. How cool is that?
